Experiment!

It’s simple. Four wheels (2 x front, 2 x rear), four tires. Chop and change to see what combination works.
Thanks to the nice folks that made some suggestions on what to try.

Seems like a great plan. I personally like the High Rollers, but only coz of the name – I can’t look at them without singing Ice T lyrics in my best gangster rapper voice!

The high rollers are one of the rear tyre options (rendez being the other) with an ignitor or advantage up front. Might try the rendez up front too.

High roller on the back? Intriguing.
The other night I stuck with the High Roller / Mountain King combo. It was awesome, once you got used to the fact you’d be drifting pretty much everywhere. Down the chute, through the compression, drift sideways up the other side. Whoop whoop!

A High Roller on the rear was the recommendation of the Twitter Massive.
Maxxis tyres are new to me so it’s just a case of trying stuff out.

I keep looking at the ADvantages, but I’m not mad on Maxxi’s had Minion’s and didn’t gel at all with them. I’m really liking Kenda though, they’re cheap and light as well which is nice, Cortez look a bit dull but just work, and Small Block 8′d seem to just work beautifully, Nevegal for when it’s a bit damper.

I have some Nevegals int he garage but I just couldn’t get on with them.
Ace on the descents but so draggy on the climbs and rides to/from the trailhead that I would have been quicker walking….
They might go on the MLC bike though….they seem to be MLC tyres….

grant, i agree. nevegals just feel a bit mehhhh…
i’ve had advantages on the spot for two years non stop, and they rock a fat one in pretty much all conditions. tarmac is rubbish as they grip hella good.

Well, test ride one is tomorrow morning. Ignitor Front/High Roller rear on dirt/gravel/roots and hopefully not ice….
We shall see what happens.
January 30th, 2010 at 10:57 pm
well, i would say, conti verts front and back, unless you’re uplifting.. and then high rollers super tacky!
January 30th, 2010 at 11:01 pm
Been using verts since 2002(?) on one bike most of the time….. Maybe time for a change..

if it aint broke…..!?!?!?!
January 31st, 2010 at 6:20 pm
They are. They don’t work in a number of conditions.

Have to say that the best combo I’ve found so far has been a High Roller on the front for grip in the slop and an Ardent on the rear, rolls well with plenty of grip.
Even if I was offered a Nevegal for free I would rather walk

So, today wasn’t the best ride for hudging tyre performance…..the trails were frozen solid, bone dry and almost anything (other than a Nevegal
) would have rolled well.
February 1st, 2010 at 6:31 pm
Frozen hard is Small Block 8 territory, to be fair I only ever run Nevegal’s as a front tyre, most of the time I just run Small Block 8′s.
February 1st, 2010 at 6:34 pm
I have a loaner pair of small Block 8′s coming at some point so they’ll get a couple of test blasts too.

They are the best tyres ever, fast a gripp and just ace they work far better than they ever should, I have some on order for the cross bike ;0)
